Ayurveda
Ayurveda (pronounced eye-your-vay’-dah) is a Sanskrit word that means “the knowledge of life.” Ayurveda is a holistic way of viewing an individual and his/her unique constitution, as well as the many factors that influence health and wellness. Ayurveda asks that you “begin within…” and holds that the very foundation for health and well being comes from self awareness.
Although Ayurveda is a healing system, it is also an art of daily living practices that support overall health and wellness. Dinacharya, or daily self care, will be part of every Ayurvedic healing plan. The goal of dinacharya is self care, observation, and increasing awareness.
Ayurveda is the science of the intersection of the body, mind, and spirit and it begins with a deep awareness of each. Ayurveda is the life science behind Yoga and in fact, Yoga was created to support Ayurvedic practices. Over 5000 years ago, practitioners made meticulous observations of human beings in the natural world, collecting enormous amounts of information about the factors influencing humans and their health. Those factors include food and tastes, plant and mineral substances, body postures and breathwork, meditation practices, the conditions of the environment, as well as the season and time of year. As such, Ayurveda will always be taught and learned in the respected embrace of Nature.
Ayurveda is about finding out who you are and getting to know your unique nature. It involves embracing your true nature and learning how to live in your body, in your world, while working toward your highest potential and purpose. This begins with awareness of both body and mind. Healing goals will always include building vital essences and immunity. Imbalances will be identified and brought to awareness. A variety of practices will be employed to bring about constitutional balance.
The practice of Yoga is a science of self-realization and the practice of Ayurveda is the science of self-healing.
